The Retail Prices index shows a drastic year on year fall of just over 8% in car prices, while the price of fish leapt 13%.

Other large annual rises were seen in oil and fuel – up 13% - air travel, which rose by more than 18% and bus and coach fares which went up more than 14%.

Over the last month, however, the largest move was in fruit and vegetables which went up 0.8%: driven, the Treasury says, by seasonal increases.

Treasury data shows the last time inflation was this low was in June 2003.
