Counsellor dupes alcoholic

by isleofman.com 10th August 2006
A counsellor from the Isle of Man has been found guilty of brainwashing an alcoholic client into giving her almost a quarter of a million pounds.

Mary McCullagh, 59, encouraged Nicole Anderson to keep drinking, warning her that stopping could trigger a fatal fit.

She has been warned she will now face a lengthy jail term.

McCullagh told Mrs Anderson she had multiple sclerosis and was dying of lung cancer.

She was said to have spent the money on luxury holidays and a Vauxhall 4X4.

When Mrs Anderson’s money dried up, McCullagh had an affair with David Oliver and tricked him into giving her ?9,000 – claiming her son needed medical treatment in America.

A jury at Bournemouth Crown Court found her guilty of 12 counts of obtaining money by deception and one of obtaining property by deception.
