Grieving father calls for 'appropriate' sentencing

A grieving father has spoken of his anguish and concern on the eve of the first anniversary of his daughter’s death.

Nineteen year-old Laura Mae Beattie was killed on August the 17th last year in a collision on the Mountain Road.

In June, Onchan man Andrew Galka was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and received an 18 month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Laura Mae’s father, Brian, says he is disgusted at the Attorney General’s decision not to appeal against the sentence and has written to the Attorney General’s Chambers seeking answers to questions about the legal process and the way the prosecution case was presented.

Mr Beattie, who described the sentence as a 'an absolute disgrace’ and one that ‘sends out totally the wrong message to society’, says he is not seeking revenge or vengeance - just an appropriate sentence reflecting nature of crime.

And he doesn’t believe the man who caused his daughter’s death realises the extent of the suffering his actions have caused:
