Snaefell Mine wheel to turn on Sunday

by isleofman.com 18th August 2006
What started out as a labour of love will finally become a reality on Sunday.

And for the many volunteers who have lovingly overseen the restoration of the Laxey Wheel’s little sister, the original Snaefell Mine waterwheel, it will be a very proud moment indeed.

Over fifty foot in diameter and taking five litres of water a second to turn, three years of tireless dedication will be officially complete with the official opening and first turning of the wheel at two o’clock in Laxey Valley Gardens.

It forms the centrepiece of a fun day which starts at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning and will conclude 12 hours later with a spectacular light and laser show.

Chairman of the Laxey Mines Research Group, project director Pete Geddes, says it’s been a massive undertaking.
