Vagas and Douglas face tough openers

by isleofman.com 8th September 2006
Vagabonds get their 2006/07 Euromanx League campaign off the mark this Saturday when they face a tough task against Leigh at Glencrutchery Road.

Leigh just missed out on promotion last season and done the double over Vagas in two quite tight games which suggests that this could be an away win.
Coach Franzy Germishuys has however been working the Vagas squad hard in the pre-season and says his team are revved up and ready for action.
They have home advantage and only lost out by two points in the corresponding fixture last season which suggests that a flying start is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Points are what are needed to win matches and Vagas had points in abundance last season from stand off Jonny Beckley who topped the kicking stats in this Division with a haul of 138 points and his continued form will be crucial to Vagas efforts this year.
Stats however can work both ways and last season Leigh’s Dave wood, Carl Bibby and James Bridge all featured in the top 10 try scorers for the division with 25 tries between them.

Douglas travel to Southport for their opener. Southport have been relegated in the past two seasons but several top line players have returned to the club for the new season. Southport have heavily beaten sides ranked higher than them in pre-season so Douglas face a real test of their reslove.
