If you’ve been sent a cheque for ?1,000 from Peter Brown to cover accommodation costs at a Christian summit this year, police have a message for you - get in touch because it’s a con.
Fraudsters operating from a fictitious address in London have been sending cheques to businesses and ask for change from the ?1,000 or ?2,000.
The business spends the money before the bank discovers the cheque is forged or stolen – leaving the firm out of pocket.
Detective Sergeant Mike Venables, of the Financial Crime Unit, says so far hotels and those in the leisure industry have been targets.
