Manx check out Guernsey labour moves

by isleofman.com 4th January 2007
The Manx Government, through the Department of Industry, has consulted with the Attorney General's offices after news that Guernsey intends following the UK in limiting access to the Channel Island's labour market for workers from the two new EU member states.

Guernsey is to limited employment access through work permits to skilled workers from Romania and Bulgaria. That would bar their low or unskilled workers from coming to work on the Island.

Chris Corlett, Chief Executive at the Department of Industry
( pictured centre) described the move as " interesting" and said that the Manx Government had to understand exactly what Guernsey had done and why they have done it and that if further steps were needed to protect the Isle of Man, then he was sure the Minister would consider that.

However, he emphasised that the current legislation was designed to safeguard the Manx workforce and there was no need to fear an " invasion".
