Malew and Colby cause massive cup shocks!

by isleofman.com 8th January 2007
Malew and Colby were the stars of the FA Cup as the Second Division minnows shocked established top flight clubs with superb successes on Saturday.Mid-table Malew triumphed 1-0 at Ayre United in one of the shocks in the competition’s recent history – a superb triumph for Danny Cowin’s side in the Cu-Plas preliminary round.Meanwhile, Colby also produced a stunning 4-1 win to send southern rivals Rushen United crashing out at Glen Road.Aaron Hawley had fired Rushen into the lead against his former club but that was as good as it got for Rushen who then lost the unfortunate Hawley with ligament damage which will keep him out for two months.Colby produced a display which belied their league position and, after James Collett grabbed an important equaliser, the strike pairing of Sam Renshaw and Josh Kelly took over.Renshaw fired Colby in front before the break.15 year-old Kelly continued his impressive form with the third after the interval before Renshaw rounded off a memorable day for Colby and a major cup shock.Marown forgot their league worries to defeat Gymns 4-3 after extra-time at Crosby.Kevin Pulman, Kevin Druggan, Neil Withers (penalty) and Ricky Lovett were the home side’s goal scorers to book their place in the first round.Ciaran McNulty (two) and Roger Davies found the net as Gymns battled to the end.The other side in the Division One relegation zone, Braddan, performed well but couldn’t match Marown’s result – going down 4-2 at home to Peel.Steve Corkill, Nigel Shimmin, Neil Birchenough and Callum Gallagher grabbed the goals as the new Railway Cup winners embarked on another cup run. Will Smith and Andrew Lancaster were the scorers for Braddan.A goal in each half from Paddy Horne helped St Mary’s overcome a potentially tricky tie with a 2-0 win at Union Mills, while Division One leaders St George’s won 3-1 at Ramsey. After a goalless first half, the Geordies progressed courtesy of second half goals from Mark Carrick, Callum Morrissey and James McStay.Tony Corlett was the home side’s scorer.Holders Laxey exposed the gulf in class between Division One and Two.Four-goal Rob Sorby inspired the champions to demolish Onchan 9-1 at Glen Road. There were other goals for Lee Cowley (two), John Callow, Ross Williamson and Nigel Beattie before Brian Ring scored a last minute consolation for battling Onchan, who finished the match with nine men.It was a similar story at Noble’s Park as top-flight Douglas Royal defeated Second Division Ronaldsway 7-0, thanks to a Craig Taylor hat-trick and goals from Gavin Gawne, Jamie Carr, Simon Wosser and Aaron Quinn. The club at the bottom of Division Two, Jurby, gave Castletown a battle but Town always had the edge – winning 6-3 with John Ellis (two), Ashley Sansbury, Alex Cawley and Tom Charmer among the scorers.Pulrose avenged a recent GH Corlett Woods Cup defeat with a 2-1 win over neighbours the Police, while Michael Shimmin and Jamie Moffatt each grabbed a brace as Michael thrashed Foxdale 7-0 in the western derby.Paul Corlett, Richard Crowe and Dean Wales were the other scorers.Corinthians are the new leaders of CFS Division Two after a 12-0 victory over Douglas and District.Steve Glover led the scoring with four. His strike partner, talented youngster, Jamie Stoy grabbed a hat-trick, and there were further goals from Kevin Harding (two), Paul Davis, Paul Healy and Stuart Christian.
