Vagas back in action

by isleofman.com 10th January 2007
Vagabonds entertain Anselmians this Saturday in their first game of 2007 after their trip to Aspull was postponed last weekend because of a waterlogged pitch. The game kicks off at 2.30pm and has all the hallmarks of a close encounter. Anselmians had an even worse start to the season than Vagas and they didn’t pick up their first win until November. Since then however their form has been on the up and they have won four from their last five matches, with stand off Chris Wells and full back Terry Williams providing a fair slice of the points whether the ball is in hand or on the boot.

Vagas won the earlier fixture on the Wirral 20-13 and this will give the some confidence going into this game. The additional week off will have given some of those tired limbs an extra breather, so in theory the squad should be heading into this one in tip top condition.
Christo Roelofse and Ewald Kilian both had a trot out in the seconds last Saturday as did Jordan Luyt, with all three featuring on the scoresheet. Hopefully this will provide coach Franzy Germishuys with the best possible selection headache as he tries to find place for everyone, including of course the returning Leigh Kennaugh. In the forwards, Kevin Birchall was on song in the seconds and he must be pretty close to staking his claim for a front row spot.

Anselmians lost 31-11 at home to league leaders Northwich last weekend and they too will be keen to get their first points of 2007. Their league standing puts them just four points below Vagas, and that margin would be even closer only for a two point deduction for a rule infringement.
