The key objectives for the project to undertake a " rapid and independent" review of the work permit system has been listed.
The 12th of February has been marked down as the final date for public submissions. It should be in writing.
Nick Black, Chief Officer of the Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading, is overseeing the project.
The priorities are to review the impact and effectiveness of the current legislation and identifying any areas of possible improvement; to review the enforcement of the current legislation and making recommendations for any necessary improvement; to review the administration of the current system and making recommendations for any necessary improvement; to identify any conflicts or dependencies that arise out of the operation of controls in place for matters related to issues of immigration, residency, state benefits or other key economic aspects and making recommendations as to the need for any further review of these matters.
The views of members of the public, major employers, trade associations, trade unions and public sector bodies are being sought and public notices are being placed in the local press this week.
The Minister, David Cretney, says he is keen to ensure that the system in place works to the benefit of the economy and Isle of Man Workers. He is already making steps to allow better public scrutiny of the system and thus help build public confidence in it, but he has requested a rapid and independent review of the system so that he can be sure that it remains effective and relevant to today’s economy and is able to inspire confidence amongst employers, employees and the wider public.
