Vagabonds lose at Widnes but Douglas charge continues

by isleofman.com 27th January 2007
There were mixed fortunes for the Manx sides in the EuroManx leagues as Vagabonds were narrowly defeated by Widnes in Division One but Douglas’ promotion push continued in Division Three.

Vagas got of to a good start with an early Jonny Beckley penalty settling the nerves well and, to all intents and purposes, they had the game wrapped up with a 16-14 lead with less than two minutes to play.

Widnes, however, didn’t read the script and a last ditch try was enough to snatch the points.

Douglas were not so unlucky in their game against Marple.

Gareth Hooson-Owen’s sixth minute try, converted by Lee Illott, put them in front 7-0.

Marple pulled one back through Dave Cook before an Illott penalty redressed the balance and gave Douglas a 10-5 half time lead.

Marple battled hard at the beginning of the second half and eventually equalised through full back Si Owens to set up an interesting last ten minutes.

However, the threat of failure spurred Douglas on and, after Illott restored the lead with a penalty, Marple were finished off with two quick tries.

Adam Gaggs bagged the first on his full debut and the second came from replacement wing Steve Tansell, who had been brought on after playing for the B team on the adjacent pitch.
