Champions at last!

by isleofman.com 10th March 2007
After weeks of not being in action, Ramsey were finally crowned Shimmin Wilson Manx Shield Champions for the second time in three years as they beat Douglas B 13-8 at a windy Mooragh Park.

Douglas could have spoiled the party with a battling performance and, with a little more luck, could have won the game.

The match was finely poised 3-3 at half time after Douglas’ Neil Cartwright and Ramsey’s Shaun Wyllie traded penalty kicks.

Cartwright, however, missed two shorts at goal which ultimately proved the difference.

Wyllie kicked Ramsey in front with a penalty after six minutes of the second half.

They forged further ahead when Darren Ideson squeezed home from close range and Wyllie’s conversion gave them a 13-3 lead.

Douglas fought back in the closing 20 minutes and, after Geoff Miles’ run down the left wing gave them good field position, skipper Mark McGee powered over from fifteen metres out to make it 13-8 which was how it finished.

Ramsey's title success confirmed their position as the dominant force in the league.

They hold a 100 per cent Shield record going into the closing stages of the season.

In the other Shimmin Wilson Shield match, Southern Nomads beat the spirited Northern Spaniards 57-26 in a try fest at King Williams College.

Ben Campbell and Wig Bregazzi were among the Nomads scorers, while Micheal Flynn, Chris Melvin, Gavin Stephenson and Tommy Callister all crossed for the Spaniards.
