Police and Corinthians cause Junior Cup surprises

by isleofman.com 14th April 2007
The Police caused the shock of the day as they defeated St John’s in the preliminary round of the IoM Bank Junior Cup.

Goals from promising youngster Josh Gardner (two), Mike Musson and Darren Loader sealed a 4-2 victory for the CFS Combination Two side against their OSA Combination One opponents.

At Noble’s Park, Corinthians scored SIX times in extra-time to surprise a side in the league above them, Ramsey.

The match had ended 2-2 after normal time but Corinthians then went on the rampage to win 8-3!

Scott Dalton, Mark Slinger and Ernie Scott were Ramsey’s marksmen.

A hat-trick from Brett Armitage, plus a double from Tony Edgar and goals from Lewis Thornton, Rob Bentley and Phil Hughes stunned Ramsey in extra-time.

Castletown gave Ayre United a scare before the northerners triumphed 5-2.

Town had led 2-1 at the break with goals from Jamie Dent and Steven Wade.

However, Ayre came from behind with veteran Stephen Easthope (two), Jason Craine (two) and Phil Quayle on target to book the Tangerines’ place in the next round.

Second half goals from Luke Wozzer, Sean Valentine, Daniel Jones and Ben Campbelton secured Douglas Royal a 4-0 home success over Braddan after a goalless first period, and the scoreline was repeated as a strong Laxey side won at Gymns, courtesy of goals from Michael Fernandez (two), Juan Kinnish and Dave Thomas.

Two goals, including a penalty, from Darran Shimmin helped Marown to a 4-1 victory over Foxdale in the western derby.

Conrad Kumar and Andy Wenman grabbed the others in a 4-1 home win.
Peel were hard pushed before winning the other western derby in the round, 3-1 at home to Michael.

A Gary Christian brace and a Daniel Bell goal sealed the win. Mark Reynolds notched the Michael goal – all the goals coming in the first half.

Former Island international Brian Gartland was the hero with a second half hat-trick as Old Boys overturned a half-time deficit to defeat St Mary’s 3-2 at Blackberry Lane.

Gartland’s treble, two of which came from the penalty spot, meant the prolific Jamie Charlton’s double was in vain for the Saints, who had led 1-0 at the break.

Pulrose produced a good fightback to avoid a surprise at the hands of Ronaldsway at Groves Road.

Veteran Andrew Cadwallader, Chris Murphy and Rob Bell found the net for the Rockets, who had led 2-0 at the break.

However, a double from Martin Kearney, along with Jimmy Robinson and Tony Skillicorn goals, sealed a 4-3 win victory for the home side.

An Andrew Bunce hat-trick led a strong Rushen team to a 9-0 win at lower league opponents, Ramsey Youth Centre.

Experienced campaigner Dickie Corrin (two), Jamie Newton (two), Tony Rodgers and Ciaran Brown grabbed the others.

It was equally one-way as Union Mills demolished Jurby 12-0 – Craig Duncan (two), Michael Collister (two), Chris Quinton (two), Richard Cannell, Dean Corlett, Paul Blair, Ian Drake, Neil Cain, plus an own goal, made it an emphatic day for the Millers.
