Big two to meet in Manx cup

by isleofman.com 5th May 2007
The two top sides in Manx hockey will meet in this season’s men’s Cup Final.

Newly crowned champions Bacchas A were already assured of a place in the final after their semi-final opponents, Castletown A, were unable to field a team.

And arch rivals Valkyrs A booked their place after being hard pushed by impressive Ramsey A.

A Greg Miller penalty and Gerry Quinn strike edged out Ramsey 2-1, for whom Dan Stevenson was on target.

The men’s plate final will be between Harlequins and Ramsey Roosters after two dramatic semi-finals.

Alex Cave and Dave Cooper were the Quins’ scorers in a 2-2 draw with Saracens before they went on to triumph 2-1 on penalties – Quins’ goalkeeper David Whiting the hero in the shoot-out.

And Ramsey Roosters caused a surprise to see off Vikings B, after a 1-1 draw, in a marathon 8-7 success on penalties.

The women’s national hockey side performed well in the UK.

They produced an impressive 2-2 draw with Lancashire - Niamh Goddard and Andrea Kneen the scorers.

Kim Carney was on target as the Island battled well, going down narrowly 3-1 to Northumberland, last year’s North of England county champions.

The Island side was also defeated 1-0 by Humberside in a closely fought match.

They take on Cheshire, Durham, and Cumbria on Sunday.
