The Treasury Minister has pointed at employment opportunities as a plus for the economy.
It comes after the blows at Charterhouse in Ramsey and BA Connect though that's been ameliorated somewhat by the setting up of the aviation support services firm Aviotech, taking up 25 jobs.
Allan Bell says the underlying thread through the economy is strength.
A downward trend in the number of individuals on the Unemployment Register and for the fifth successive month, the total of persons unemployed lower than at the same month the previous year.
Mr Bell admits that every job loss suffered is painful to the individual, and it is also hurtful to Government because we strive to afford companies and entrepreneurs the best commercial environment possible. And that we will continue to do.
“The real strength of the economy will be seen over the next few months in how readily the individuals affected can be absorbed back into paid employment.”
The Labour Market Report for March revealed a fall in unemployment over the month by 64, to 552. This is equivalent to 1.3% of the Island’s economically active population of almost 42,000, and compares favourably with rates elsewhere. The March rate for the UK is 2.9% and for Ireland 4.2%. Across the rest of Europe say the Government, unemployment rates are typically above 5%.
