Top names fall in Golf Championship

It was the "night of the long knives" for the top established players at the Isle of Man Golf Championship last sixteen matchplay round at Douglas yesterday evening.

Only one former Champion has made it through to today's quarter-finals - 2003 victor Davy Jones from Ramsey who beat eight-time winner Julian Sutton.

The other eight-timer, Gary Wilson, lost to Mike Rae....defending champion from the past two years Paul Lowey went down to Andrew Challenor....and 2004 top dog Kevin Moore was beaten by Brian Duggan.

The results in full:-

Jonathan Corke beat top qualifier Chris Kneen by the margin of 1 hole;
Peter Glover beat Kevin Corlett 4 & 3;
Mike Rae beat Gary Wilson 2 & 1;
Gary Hunter beat Richard Skillicorn 2 & 1;
Davy Jones beat Julian Sutton 2 & 1;
Steve Jeffers beat Paul Crellin at the first extra hole;
Brian Duggan beat Kevin Moore 3 & 1;
and Andrew Challenor beat Paul Lowey 3 & 2.

The draw for tonight's quarter-finals is:-

5pm - Jonathan Corke (Rowany) v Peter Glover (Douglas)
5.10pm - Mike Rae (Rowany) v Gary Hunter (Douglas)
5.20pm - Davy Jones (Ramsey) v Steve Jeffers (Castletown)
5.30pm - Brian Duggan (King Edward Bay) v Andrew Challenor (Castletown)
