Warning to UK 'tax criminals'

by isleofman.com 21st June 2007
The United Kingdom's top taxman has warned there will be no let-up in the campaign to track down unpaid tax hidden abroad, including accounts in the Isle of Man.

About 400,000 people have until midnight tomorrow to tell the authorities they will be making a full disclosure of their offshore savings.

Director General of Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, Dave Hartnett, says some are clearly criminals who have lied about their tax affairs.

He says some of the people whose accounts have been uncovered have their tax affairs in good order, while others might simply have been muddled.

However, he adds: 'There are some who have deliberately hidden money offshore and still more who have lied to us in the past about the accuracy of their tax returns and continue to do so. I think they are criminals'.
