The Treasury Minister has vowed to try again after Tynwald voted against re-appointing four members of the Insurance and Pensions Authority.
The House of Keys was divided at 12-12, while the Legislative Council voted six-three against the proposals.
After seeing his choices rejected, Allan Bell (pictured) said Tynwald might not realise that such line-ups, prepared to take on such 'onerous work', were hard to find.
He also dismissed suggestions it was a case of 'jobs for the boys':
