Bermudan BlackBerry owners were warned last week that when they leave the Island with the wireless PDA devices, if they are unable to prove they were not purchased elsewhere when they return, they may have them confiscated, or be obliged to pay import tax.

In its most recent newsletter, the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce announced that:

‘The Chamber has been advised by the Bermuda Customs Department that they will confiscate any Blackberry device found on any persons re-entering the country that do not have the relevant registered paperwork. M3Wireless has already had two customers experience this over the last five days.’

Reporting on the matter, Bermuda's Royal Gazette revealed the jurisdiction's BlackBerry users will need to obtain a registration slip for the device from the customs department, which they should keep with it when traveling, in order to avoid confiscation or additional levies.
