The Steam Packet’s switch to Birkenhead with the Ben my Chree at weekends is said to be responsible for 771 extra passengers using the Sea Terminal in December.

Figures from the Department of Transport show passengers arriving and departing from Douglas rose during every month of 2007.

December’s statistics, released today, show 290,000 passengers travelled on the Birkenhead route, up nine per cent on the previous year.

Belfast and Dublin routes carried 16 per cent more people, while Heysham’s numbers rose by eleven per cent.

Director of Harbours, Captain Michael Brew says the Steam Packet’s revised winter schedule has produced a positive response.
