Council's concern over Border merger

by isleofman.com 29th February 2008
The campaign to stop ITV merging its Border news operation with Tyne Tees has spread to Douglas Council.

A Border delegation was in the Island to meet Chief Minister Tony Brown last week and the representatives were also guests of the Mayor and Mayoress Colin and Sue Cain at the mayor’s parlour.

One of the delegation, Carlisle MP Eric Martlew, said he was delighted with the Council’s support and again asked people to write to the United Kingdom's communications watchdog, Ofcom with their views.

Policy and Resources Committee Chairman David Christian said the Council had already made representation to ITV Executive Chairman Michael Grade and would now contact Ofcom with its concerns the proposed merger would result in the loss of Isle of Man news coverage.

Mr Christian said merging with Tyne Tees would only lead to a serious decline in Manx issues being aired on regional television.
