New Bluetongue restrictions

The Island's farming industry is facing new restrictions on the importation of livestock - in the latest move against Bluetongue disease.

From 6pm tonight (Saturday), there'll be a ban on imports of female cattle over 12 months and sheep over six months old, from Bluetongue-restricted zones in the United Kingdom.

It comes after scientists revealed new evidence about the way the disease is transmitted.

Agriculture minister Phil Gawne (pictured) says further risks have been identified in pregnant animals (audio file attached):
