Island first for covert radios

Undercover officers in the Isle of Man will be the first to benefit from new covert TETRA radios.

The Department of Home Affairs has spent around ?80,000 on the new Motorola handsets, which are the size of a small mobile phone and can be hidden more easily than the standard devices.

They will be used by Police and Customs and Excise from this summer.

DHA Technical Director Robert Williamson (pictured) says officers on the Island have been closely involved in the development of the new technology:
