MER spending not done yet - Earnshaw

by isleofman.com 12th March 2008
Report from Business Editor, John Moss:

Tynwald has voted 'yes', unanimously, to spending ?5 million on getting the Manx Electric Railway track from Laxey to Ramsey operational for at least half the coming season.

Tourism Minister Adrian Earnshaw said he and his officers had been able to produce a scheme in just three weeks.

But he warned still more cash would be needed for other parts of the line.

For ?5 million we can have tourists rattling along the land-side track between July and September, and both tracks can be brought up to scratch by next season.

But, Mr Earnshaw told members, the condition of poles on other parts of the line, for instance up the Mountain, meant the spending wasn't done yet.

The ?5 million is to be paid back over 30 years.
