by isleofman.com 14th March 2008
A medal and certificate presented to a Manx war hero by the town of Dunkirk are on display at the House of Manannan, after being acquired by Manx National Heritage.

Arthur James Allen played a part in the large scale evacuation of troops from the beaches of Normandy, in 1940.

He was a merchant seaman on the Steam Packet vessel Tynwald, which played it's part in the company's proud record of picking up one in six of the 300,000 solders saved.

Curator of Social history for MNH, Matthew Richardson, says the Isle of Man made a huge contributed to victory over Nazi Germany (audio file attached):

Manx National Heritage would like to speak to any members of Mr Allen's family who could provide more information about their relative.
