Japanese Knotweed 'choking rivers'

An organisation which monitors the Isle of Man's water courses fears an invasive plant is in the process of causing major problems.

The Manx Rivers Improvement Society says Japanese Knotweed is spreading rapidly on the Island and in places is choking rivers.

In summer the plant with its bamboo like red stems and large mid-green leaves can grow up to three metres in height, and it effectively chokes out native plants and river life.

Society Secretary Brian Craig says there's a real danger that parts of the Douglas River through Tromode and Baldwin will be completely blocked by Knotweed.

He says urgent action needs to be taken as soon as possible:
