The Island's schools are now catering for children from some 33 different language backgrounds.
There are 212 children in Primary schools for whom English is not their first language, with 155 needing some kind of learning support, although around 60 of the children don't need any support and are sometimes some of the best in their class in English.
Speaking on yesterday's Sunday Opinion programme, which was looking at the problems of educating the children of recent immigrants to the Island, Deputy Director of the Department of Education, Stuart Dobson, says whilst individual schools are charged with assessing individual educational needs, he admits the task would be easier if all the immigrant children were concentrated in one specific area:
