Border looking for more Tynwald support

by isleofman.com 27th March 2008
A Border television presenter is urging Chief Minister Tony Brown to get behind the campaign to secure the station's future.

Adam Powell says it now seems very likely that Border will be merged with the Tyne Tees region, after it was announced there will be just one director to cover both areas.

He believes this would have serious implications for the Isle of Man's news coverage.

Mr Powell was in a Border delegation which travelled to the Island last month to discuss the issue.

He says Douglas Council was firmly against a merger, but there was a lack of commitment from Tynwald (audio file attached):

Manx Radio contacted the Chief Minister for a response, and a spokesman said the government's approach was guided by a Tynwald resolution on the issue.

In October last year Juan Turner MLC put forward a motion stating that if Border was merged with Tyne Tees, the Isle of Man should be served by ITV Granada.

Mr Turner's proposal was unanimously supported by Tynwald.
