Stormy seas forced the Steam Packet fast-craft Viking to return to Douglas about half an hour into this morning's delayed sailing to Liverpool.
The 7.30 service got away just before 9am, but a decision was taken to come back about eight miles into the crossing.
Harbour Control told Manx Radio the service was delayed because of the weather, and the forecast south to south-easterly winds, of force six to gale force eight, also led to the return.
The Steam Packet is monitoring the weather and an announcement will be made later on whether the service will operate today.
