Manx tanker runs aground

by isleofman.com 1st April 2008
The Bahamas Environment, Science & Technology Commission is investigating how a Manx-registered tanker came to be grounded on a reef near Nassau.

The Ficus (pictured), a Shell oil tanker, has been refloated after spending a week on the reef last month, and officials are trying to discover whether the vessel caused any environmental damage.

Twenty-five crew were on board the double-hulled tanker which leaked some of its cargo, and Shell experts are now assessing damage.

A full investigation has been launched by the BEST Commission with help from Isle of Man authorities.

Jason Roberts reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

The commission says it’s waiting for a report from The Isle of Man, as well as reports on what condition the ship was in before and after it ran aground.

The vessel remains in Clifton Pier while investigations are being conducted.

Minister of Labour and Maritime Affairs Dion Foulkes says he hopes to have a report on his desk in about two weeks.

After the investigation is completed there will be a full public report into the incident.
