Summit stalemates as Bacchas stay clear

by isleofman.com 9th April 2008
The top two sides in Manx hockey fought out a goalless draw on Saturday.

Valkyrs and reigning champions Bacchas A could not be separated as Bacchas’ 100 per cent record came to an end.

However, the result, coupled with another goalless draw between Vikings A and Ramsey A, keeps Bacchas five points clear at the top and on course to retain the title.

The Vikings-Ramsey match was an exciting end-to-end contest but neither side could break the deadlock.

Stephen Cottier was the hero as Castletown A twice fought back from behind to draw 2-2 against Saracens.

Saracens led twice through Danny Kniveton and Mark Corlett but Cottier replied on both occasions and also cleared two shots off the line to deny Saracens.

Vikings B battled well but went down 3-2 to a late goal to Bacchas B – Craig Leece, Tom Wilson and Andy Whiting the scorers.

In women’s Division One, leaders Vikings A extended their lead at the top as they thrashed Harlequins 7-1 and Ramsey A produced a stirring second half fight back to hold reigning champions Bacchas A to a 2-2 draw.

Doubles from Kim Carney, Jan Carney and Dani Kelly and one from Danielle Coombes ensured a comprehensive win for Vikings with Alison Hurd scoring the Quin’s consolation.

And that put them three points clear as second half goals from Alison Breen and Sarah Breen sealed a fine point for Ramsey after Bacchas A had led 2-0, courtesy of goals from Donna Harrison and Sharon Pope.

Doubles from Lauren Stewart and Lois Watterson, and one each from Katie Tinkler, Claire Power and Sophie Faragher, fired Castletown A to a 7-1 success over Valkyrs B, whose goal was scored by Carol Whitelegg, while Valkyrs A saw off Phoenix A 5-1 – Tracy Lyness with the Phoenix goal.
