New laws to deal with violent pupils

Teachers could soon be given the legal right to restrain violent children under proposals from the Department of Education.

A new education bill would see teachers allowed to use approved restraining techniques if pupils were harming themselves or others, or damaging property.

There are also moves to give teachers the power to search students if they were suspected of carrying offensive weapons.
