Poverty question

by isleofman.com 10th April 2008
The government says it doesn’t have a definition of poverty – but it is working to raise living standards.

In the House of Keys on Tuesday, Rushen MHK Juan Watterson (pictured) asked Chief Minister Tony Brown about the issue.

In particular, he wanted to know how the government defines poverty, how many people in the Isle of Man are considered to fall into the category and what policies were in place to address it.

In a written reply, Mr Brown said the government hadn’t defined poverty and there was no common definition among other countries.

However, he said the government’s strategic plan was to give everybody a fair opportunity to live and prosper.
