Tense wait for Vagabonds

by isleofman.com 12th April 2008
Skanco Vagabonds crashed to a 21-16 home defeat against Widnes and now face a tense wait to find out whether they will avoid relegation. Vagas were three points above the danger zone and a win against Widnes would have made them safe however they must now wait for other results to be certain of their fate.

Pablo Paladino scored a first half try for Vagas and a conversion and penalty from skipper Johnny Beckley kept them in the hunt trailing 13-10 at half-time. Beckley added another penalty and a drop goal in the second half but it wasn't enough to get past Widnes who are aiming for a top four finish this season.

If Aspull, Ruskin Park and Anselmians all fail to win this weekend, Vagas could be safe despite this result.

Douglas were crowned champions a fortnight ago and promotion was already in the bag, but this didn't stop Douglas finishing the season in style with a 17-0 win away at Prenton in Euromanx South Lancs/Cheshire Div 3.

Mark McGee and Chris Brew both weighed in with tries, with Bryn Snellgrove knocking over two conversions and a penalty to complete the scoring. Douglas now have a two week break before taking on Vagabonds in the Manx Cup Final.

Ramsey bowed out of the Shimmin Wilson sponsored domestic rugby competitions with a 20-5 win over Southern Nomads in the final of the Manx Trophy competition.

Nomads took the lead in this brutal game with a Rob Keelan try in the opening quarter. Ramsey clawed their way back into the match midway through the first half with a try from skipper Tynan Pritchard to level the match at 5-5.

The Manx Shield holders took the lead just before the break with a Will Keenan try converted by Tynan Pritchard to leave the score 12-5 at the turnaround.

Both sides went close in the second half before Ramsey made the game safe in the closing minutes with a Tynan Pritchard penalty to leave Nomads needing two scores. As the southerners chased the game at the end, they left themselves vulnerable at the back and Ramsey exploited this when Andy Wilson sneaked over for a try with the final play of the game.
