Favourites progress in Junior Cup

Junior Cup favourites Peel had to work hard for a 4-3 win against Douglas Royal at Noble's Park. The game was nicely poised at half-time, at two goals apiece and with a couple of minutes to go there was still noting between the sides with the score at 3-3. Then Peel brought on Nathan Jones, who scored a dramatic winner with his first touch of the ball. David Smart grabbed a hat-trick for Royal, including two penalties, and the other scorers for Peel were Andy Quirk, Ryan Holdaway and Chris Looney.

Corinthians put in a sterling second half performance to beat Police 6-1, having led 1-0 after 45 minutes. The scorers were Richard Mulhern (3), Brett Armitage, Steven Corrin and Adam Watterson.

Laxey, who have a good recent record in the competition, progressed to the last eight with a 4-2 home win against Union Mills. The goals came from David Corlett, Michael Fernandes, Warren Wilson and Jamie Delaney.

Rushen, who some feel have an outside chance of winning the competition, had to go to extra time to beat St George's 4-1, at Croit Lowey. Rushen's scorers were Patrick Martin (2), Stuart Kneen and Stephen Watterson and their keeper, Dicky Corrin, saved his third penalty in a week.

Marown beat Onchan in a closely fought game at the Nivison Stadium. Johnny Tonks (2), Kyle McGuire and Steve Thatcher netted for Marown, and Onchan's scorers included Brian Ring and Richard Jameson.

Goals from Liam Wheeler and James Brown gave Ayre United a 2-1 win at Braddan, and in the remaining game St Mary's won 2-1 at home to Castletown.
