Speaker to attend BIC conference

by isleofman.com 24th April 2008
The Manx Government is hoping to gain support from its Irish counterpart as it prepares to voice its concerns over Sellafield.

Speaker of the House of Keys Steve Rodan (pictured) will make the request for cooperation when he attends the latest British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Conference in Wexford next week.

Edward Oldham reports (text, below, from attached audio file):

Mr Rodan will ask the Irish Government to work closely with the Island via the British-Irish Council Environmental Group.

They will call for Westminster to complete a joint paper on Sellafield's safety, security and environmental impact, stop all fuel reprocessing and manufacturing, and promote the ultimate closure of the plant.

Mr Rodan says it's important for the Island to be recognised as representing itself and having its own opinions on matters such as Sellafield.

The conference takes place on Monday and Tuesday next week.
