Incinerator warning after fires

A series of small fires at the Braddan incinerator has led its operator to appeal to people to check what they’re throwing away.

A number of hotspots in rubbish at the plant have caught light this week, although the blazes were quickly tackled by staff and the fire brigade.

Jeffrey Robinson of SITA says the problem is not an unusual one and can usually be traced back to car batteries or hot ashes in the waste pit.

He’s appealing for people to dispose of potentially hazardous wastes safely (audio file attached):
