A coastguard rescue team and lifeboat were called out after reports of an emergency off Langness in the south of the Island last night.
A vessel was heard calling for assistance over the radio, but despite searching the stretch of water between Langness and Garwick for more than three hours, rescue teams drew a blank.
It's thought the call may have been a hoax.
