Tribute paid to student

by isleofman.com 7th May 2008
The principal of the Isle of Man College has paid tribute to an 18-year-old student killed in a road accident at Hillberry on Saturday night.

Michael David Kelly, from Douglas, was a passenger in a blue Vauxhall Zafira which collided with a roadside wall and flipped onto its roof.

Edward Oldham reports (audio file attached):

Dr Ian Killip (pictured) says Mike was a larger than life character who passionately believed in Preston North End and their aspirations to triumph over minor rivals such as Manchester United.

He also enjoyed playing football and was a stalwart of Jurby Football Club in the Second Division, where he played in midfield.

As a popular student, known to students in all areas of the College, his loss is very keenly felt by everyone.

Dr Killip says the prospect of not seeing Mike sitting with his friends in the same area of the College Refectory is one they'll all miss.

And he concludes by saying that through his untimely death, the world has lost a person with tremendous potential for the future, a potential that he was only recently starting to realise.
