MNH reward offer 'not enough'

A Peel man who unearthed a hoard of Viking coins more than five years says he will not accept the latest reward offer from Manx National Heritage.

Andy Whewell made the discovery in Glenfaba in March 2003 using a metal detector.

He says two independent valuations he organised has priced the collection at ?490,000 and ?325,000.

Mr Whelwell says he would accept ?320,000.

However, in Tynwald later this month Vice Chairman of MNH Alex Downie will call for members to approve a payment of ?275,000.

Mr Whelwell believes it's just not good enough, and says it's more about the principle than the money:
