New coins to be created

by isleofman.com 14th May 2008
Next week, Tynwald will be asked to approve the creation of new crowns, which will be worth 25 pence.

There are a whole range of coins worth between one sixty-fourth of a crown and 160 crowns, made from platinum, gold, silver and palladium.

They’ll be circular, with a milled edge, and represent the transition of the Olympics from China to London.

Jason Roberts reports (audio file attached):

On one side of the coins, there’ll be the familiar portrait of the Queen, along with the year of the coin’s issue.

But on the back there’ll be the Great Wall of China alongside Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

Between the landmarks, there will be an Olympic athlete carrying the torch from Beijing to London and the words Beijing Olympic London.

And for those who prefer winter Olympics, there will also be some maple leaves symbolising the games, which will take place in Canada.
