Bishop's role in Tynwald - public debate

by isleofman.com 19th May 2008
The role of the Bishop in the Manx parliament will be debated at a public meeting this evening.

The Bishop has an automatic seat in Tynwald, but his right to vote has been questioned in recent times.

Objectors say his position in the Church means his views are constrained on ethical issues, such as abortion and euthanasia.

Tonight's debate, with speakers for and against the Bishop in Tynwald, has been organised by the Positive Action Group.

Many people saw the previous Bishop, Graeme Knowles, as a good person to have in Tynwald, because he spoke his mind.

But Andrew Dixon from the Isle of Man Freethinkers says that's not the point (audio file attached):

The debate starts at 7.30pm at the Empress Hotel in Douglas and all are welcome.
