Milk cartel concerns

by isleofman.com 27th May 2008
The issue of cartels will be raised in the House of Keys again tomorrow (Tuesday).

Onchan MHK Peter Karran will ask Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading Quintin Gill if he will investigate whether there are any restrictive practices, price fixing arrangements, retail price maintenance arrangements or other
anti-competitive practices in relation to the marketing of milk on the Island.

Mr Karran wants to know why, if a 'milk cartel' doesn't exist, the price of four pints of supermarket milk on the Island - which he quotes as ?2.12 - is so much higher than in the same supermarket in the UK, where he claims it's just ?1.34.

He believes this is proof there are cartels operating on the Island and provides the evidence which the chairman of the OFT had previously asked for (audio file attached):
