Further insurance assurances sought

by isleofman.com 28th May 2008
The Manx Government is being told its workers shouldn't be forced to carry out work on public roads used for motorsport events until all the current health and safety, and insurance, issues have been resolved.

Following a meeting of Whitley Council, the negotiating body for public sector manual workers, the employees side is calling for comprehensive insurance cover against any liability, for every worker.

Spokesman Bernard Moffatt says the interpretation of what is covered by the policies should be unambiguous, and it's now felt the latest written guarantee from the Department of Transport, dated May 12, doesn't go far enough.

Mr Moffatt (pictured) says there is confusion surrounding the insurance and what it covers, which is unacceptable.

There will be a further meeting of Whitley Council later this week, at which the employees' side will call for a full audit of the functioning of health and safety committees across the Manx Government.
