A verdict of misadventure has been recorded, at the resumed inquest into the death of a Ballaugh man.
Thirty-nine year-old James Robert O'Keefe, who was staying at the Grainagh Court health facility, died after meat became lodged in his throat while he was having his dinner.
A registered nurse and healthcare assistant were with him when he began to have difficulties.
At first they thought he was choking and was going to vomit, so took him through to the bathroom.
It soon became apparent Mr O'Keefe wasn't going to be sick so efforts were made to remove the blockage using the Heimlich Manoeuvre, which staff said proved ineffective because of Mr O'Keefe's size and slumped state.
Paramedics were called and arrived just over five minutes later, by which time there was no sign of a pulse.
The food, described as smaller chewed pieces of meat and a one larger, unchewed, bit was eventually removed by a paramedic using specialist equipment.
Mr O'Keefe was taken to the accident and emergency unit but couldn't be revived.
Delivering his verdict, Coroner of Inquests Michael Moyle thanked the hospital staff for their efforts and said it was a tragic situation.
