Fears for future of basking sharks

by isleofman.com 3rd June 2008
The work being carried out by Manx Basking Shark Watch could play a vital role in the future of the species, according to members of the group.

Last year they satellite tagged two animals and the study revealed the startling news that the sharks can travel across the Atlantic, as one was traced to the waters off Newfoundland.

It re-enforces the theory that the Atlantic population of sharks could be all one genetic group.

More tagging is taking place this summer.

Jackie Hall from Manx Basking Shark Watch says despite their popularity and apparent local abundance during summer months, basking shark numbers worldwide are believed to be very low and could dwindle further (audio file attached):

Jackie Hall was speaking to Dan Davies on Talking Heads.
