Aircraft carrier visits the Island

by isleofman.com 10th June 2008
Crowds of people were on Douglas Head and the promenade last night to see the Royal Navy's flagship, Ark Royal, pay a brief visit to the port.

The aircraft carrier arrived from Liverpool shortly after 9pm and turned round in the bay before heading off for Ireland.

Helicopters attached to the vessel flew overhead and later landed on the deck.

On board the vessel on the crossing from Liverpool were the Lieutenant Governor Sir Paul Haddacks, President of Tynwald Noel Cringle and Chief Minister Tony Brown, who were transferred by helicopter to the airport at Ronaldway.

The Ark Royal is over 200 metres long, weighs 20,000 tonnes and currently has a crew of 600.
