Fraudulent benefit claims highlighted

Parents are being warned not to deceive the government with fraudulent child benefit claims.

It follows an exercise carried out by the DHSS, prompted by concerns people were receiving payments for children living overseas.

Eight claims were stopped and, in a further 17 cases, steps are being taken to recover overpayments.

Political member of the DHSS Juan Watterson (pictured) says a data matching exercise was carried out with the Department of Education, to make sure all the children receiving benefit were attending school (audio file attached):
