River pollution threats grow

by isleofman.com 14th June 2008
Pollution is appearing again in our cleanest rivers.

Although the great majority of Manx watercourses are fair, good or very good water quality, better than England Wales or Scotland, there is now concern that some of the cleanest rivers have shown a deterioration.

A monitoring programme is in force which includes a check three times a year at over 80 sites.

One problem is the economic boom which has meant the danger of run-off grows.

To make sure the trend doesnt continue, members of the public are asked to keep their eyes open and report anything that drops the quality of the watercourses.

There is a licensing system by the Environmental Protection Unit which helps bring in better control.

Legal action is taken where necessary.
