Humpback whale spotted

by isleofman.com 19th June 2008
One of the largest creatures on earth has been spotted off the coast of the Isle of Man.

A humpback whale was seen close to the southern end of Port Soderick Bay.

A fisherman was reported as being 'surprised' to see the tail of the massive animal rising high into the air just 6 metres from his boat.

The timely sighting comes just a few days before National Whale and Dolphin Watch week which runs from 21st to 29th June.

A total of eight species of whale and dolphin can be seen in Manx waters including killer whales and the relatively rare Risso's Dolphin.

Any sightings of whales and dolphins should be reported to the Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch on mwdw.net and basking shark sightings to manxbaskingsharkwatch.com
